Originally we made larger folding tables for use as dining tables in the bush or around the camp fire. However, we found that because of the weight of material used and the large dimensions, these folding tables were not stable enough for our standards. We introduced the Camp Table to replace the larger Expedition folding table and it has been a huge success. All the stability issues we faced before are now resolved. The African Touch Camp Table is attractive, robust and extremely strong. The design is unique to the African Touch. The table top clips onto the legs with four simple snap hooks. The legs fold conveniently away making it very simple to transport and set up in camp.
We now restrict the Expedition folding table to two smaller sizes that are very stable.
The timber we use:
A great timber for the Camp Table is plantation hardwood, Eucalyptus Saligna. It is relatively light but very strong with a long grain, so not prone to cracking. Also available is the very hard Zambezi teak, which is rather heavy, or African Bloodwood (kiaat) which is lighter in weight but very attractive.
Uses of the Camp Table
By far the majority of our sales are for dining areas for Safari camps and Lodges. It is also ideal for bush diners or your garden / patio. The top is slatted to allow drainage of precipitation, and finished with an oil ideal for outdoor use and as a camping table.
The standard top size is 900mm x 900mm, but other (square) sizes can be made to order.
Ideal to use with the Camp Table are our Safari Director’s Chairs or the Kariba Chair.
Maintaining Camp Tables
Maintaining Camp Tables
Your oiled African Touch Camp Table receives three applications of Satinwood 28 Base oil prior to delivery. Our outlets carry stock, or you can find it in most hardware shops in South Africa. We recommend you do one application on installation of the furniture. From time to time you will need to re-apply the oil. If the furniture is used outdoors, please do the re-application every 3 months. When in doubt, re-apply when the finish looks faded or dry. The recommended application procedure is as follows:
- Wipe surface down with a clean cotton cloth lightly moistened with mineral turpentine. (Ensure that all surfaces are completely dry and clean before proceeding with the next step)
- Use a clean cotton cloth or soft bristled brush dipped in the oil and apply in light, short strokes, ensuring thorough and even distribution of the oil.
- Leave the oil on the furniture for at least 1 to 2 hours (but not more than 24 hours), to allow absorption into the wood.
- Use a clean cotton cloth and wipe off all excess liquid to leave a natural smooth finish.
- Allow to dry for approximately 24 hours.
If the surface of your furniture becomes a bit grimy over time it can be very effectively cleaned with Deckwash from Timberlife. Apply with a clean cloth. Work in well over the total surface and wipe off all excess liquid.
If a wet glass or similar is left on the surface it may leave a watermark. In this case please wipe the water off as soon as possible, and if necessary apply some more Satinwood 28 Base. If the mark is still slightly visible you can rub with a little baking soda mixed with an equal part of water, wipe off with a damp cloth and re-apply the oil.
For orders of 5 or more tables we offer a 10% discount. For large orders including multiple products please contact us for our offer.

- Zambezi Teak (Baikiaea plurijuga) formerly known as Rhodesian Teak . One of the hardest timbers in the world of exceptional beauty and grain.
- Saligna (Eucalyptus saligna) is a plantation hardwood sourced in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe where old growth trees (approximately 100 years old and 50 meters tall) are being removed to make way for new plantations.
- Oil. Ideal for the outdoors. It gives a natural matt look that emphasises the beautiful colour and grain of the timber. The oil should be re-applied every 6 months to a year.
At The African Touch we build with timber harvested from natural forests. The charm of this material is that no two pieces are exactly the same in colour, character or grain, and they will contain natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks and so on that enhance their authenticity and attractiveness.
Solid wood naturally oxidises and darkens with age. Zambezi teak in particular will change from a beautiful light honey brown to a darker rich red brown on exposure to light. This is a natural process so the product you receive will certainly change colour with time and may not look exactly the same as products in brochures or on our web sites.
We give a 1 year warranty against construction and material flaws for your camp table. Naturally, any miss handling or inappropriate use of the product will invalidate the warranty. The African Touch will not in any circumstances be liable for any claim which falls outside the scope of our warranty or for any consequential damages whatsoever.
