The design

The Chobe Chair by Richard Lowe. The inspiration for this chair came to me while sitting on the Chobe River in the world renown Chobe national Park in Botswana. Looking at the gentle curves and shapes in nature, I wanted a chair that reflected the plants around me, a departure from more formal and traditional chairs. The result is a unique handcrafted chair with rounded profiles and curved seat and back formed by leather straps stretched over shaped timber bearers to give a most comfortable seat that is pleasing to the eye. Each handcrafted chair is hand built by a couple of artisans at The African Touch trained by Richard. Only available in small numbers to order due to the time taken to handcraft each chair.

The material and finish.

We build this handcrafted chair from Zambezi Teak, one of the prevalent species in Chobe. It is very hard and durable, but with a lovely colour and grain. For a lighter chair, we can also use African bloodwood, or kiaat. It is also a very attractive hardwood, but lighter in weight than teak.

The leather straps are tanned bovine leather soaked in water before strapping to the chair. as the leather dries it contracts, giving a strong, firm seat and back.

A lacquer finish is excellent for an interior chair. if you wish to use it outdoors, we recommend an oil finish.

Uses of our Chobe Chair.

This comfortable, unique, handcrafted chair will uplift an office or dining space. The pleasing lines of the Chobe Chair do justice to our famous Bridge Table or Baobab Boardroom Table.

Guarantee

Guarantee

We cannot offer a warrantee on chairs except for defects in material and workmanship that affect the integrity of the chair under normal use and weight limits. The reason for this is that chairs can be subject to huge stresses (such as when a heavy person rocks back on the back legs) that are impossible to compensate for in the construction of the chair without compromising on the design appeal.

We build with timber harvested from natural forests. The charm of this material is that no two pieces are exactly the same in colour, character or grain, and they will contain natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks and so on that enhance their authenticity and attractiveness. As a result no 2 pieces will ever be identical and products may have natural imperfections. However, these will never be allowed to compromise the quality of construction of your piece.

The African Touch will not in any circumstances be liable for any claim which falls outside the scope of our warranty or for any consequential damages whatsoever.
