The Legacy of Børge Mogensen
Børge Mogensen was a pioneer in the Scandinavian modernist movement, known for his minimalist yet functional designs that made high-quality furniture accessible to the masses. His approach to design was deeply influenced by traditional craftsmanship and his desire to create pieces that could last for generations. Mogensen’s work is characterized by clean lines, natural materials, and a sense of understated elegance, and the Spanish Chair is one of his most iconic creations.
The chair was inspired by Mogensen’s travels to Spain, where he observed traditional Andalusian chairs that used sturdy materials like leather and wood. Drawing from this inspiration, he created a chair that combined the rustic charm of Spanish furniture with the sleek lines and proportions typical of Scandinavian design. The result is a chair that not only offers exceptional comfort but also serves as a striking visual statement in any interior setting.
Design and Craftsmanship
The Spanish Chair is a true testament to fine craftsmanship and the use of natural materials. Constructed from solid Zambezi Teak, the chair has a sturdy frame that exudes strength and durability. The wide armrests serve a dual purpose: they provide a comfortable surface for resting your arms, and they also act as functional side tables, allowing users to place small items like drinks or books directly on the armrests without the need for additional side furniture.
One of the most distinctive features of the Spanish Chair is its use of 100% full veg-tanned harness leather for the seat and backrest. The high-quality leather is not only aesthetically pleasing, with its rich, earthy tones, but it also offers unmatched comfort and durability. Over time, the leather develops a beautiful patina, enhancing the chair’s character and making it a unique piece that grows more beautiful with age.
The combination of teak and leather creates a chair that is as robust as it is elegant. Its solid construction ensures it can withstand years of use, while the leather upholstery adds a touch of luxury and warmth to any space.
Materials used
We generally build The Spanish Chair frame from Zambezi Teak, formerly known as Rhodesian Teak. This is a very hard and dense material. The result is that the frame is durable and exquisite, but quite heavy. A lacquer finish brings out the grain and colour beautifully, but is only recommended for indoor use. Outdoors an oil finish is best.
The cover we offer for the Spanish Chair is full thickness pure veg tanned bovine harness leather hand stitched and riveted for exceptional comfort and durability.
Uses of The Spanish Chair
The Spanish Chair remains a popular choice for design enthusiasts and interior decorators worldwide, and it has found its place in both residential and commercial spaces. Its versatile design means it can be used in a variety of settings, from modern, minimalist interiors to more traditional or rustic spaces.
For homeowners, the Spanish Chair serves as a striking centerpiece in a living room or study, providing both comfort and style. Its wide, comfortable seat makes it the perfect chair for lounging or reading, while its elegant design enhances the visual appeal of any room.
For commercial spaces, such as safari camps and lodges, boutique hotels, high-end offices, or luxury resorts, the Spanish Chair offers a sophisticated seating option that combines form and function. Its durable construction makes it ideal for high-traffic areas, while its timeless design ensures it remains relevant for years to come.
