The Design
Richard Lowe designed The Tonga hardwood chair 1994. The result is one of our earliest and most successful products.
The backrest is the key to the design. Richard designed a solid slab of Zambezi Teak curved ergonomically to fit most backs. The result is be a chair one can sit in for long hours at your favourite table. It took many trials to get the design we have today. The final shaping is done by hand with a spokeshave.
Similar attention was paid to the solid hardwood seat. It is hand carved to and designed to fit snug to your posterior, and for that reason is a comfortable seat. Finishing is done very carefully to give a smooth, beautifully clear natural hardwood chair.
The the chair is assembled with precisely cut and angled mortice and tenon joints. Large, invisible corner blocks provide great strength to the chair.
The material
This hardwood chair is built from that fantastic hardwood, Zambezi Teak. It is very difficult to work with, but the wonderful grain and colour make it all worth while. Also available in African Mahogany.
The uses of the Tonga hardwood chair
The result is a modern, stylish chair robustly built for years of use. The Tonga Chair makes an excellent companion to our Bridge Table or Boardroom Table.
