The Design

The Safari Desk fills a niche requirement for a luxurious but practical and functional writing desk that will enhance the finest residence, safari camp or hotel room. The solid brass fittings are an integral part of the design that don’t only give it an unmatched opulence. They also serve very practical purpose. The brass connecting rod holds the desk securely and rigidly together with solid brass 16mm bolts and washers. Removing the brass bolts allows the desk legs to be folded down and the whole flat packed for easy transport. The cast solid brass corner blocks protect the desk top from knocks when on safari.

Large solid hardwood slabs such as the Safari desk top will tend to warp with changing ambient humidity. That is unless they are fixed to a rail while being allowed to move horizontally. We have achieved this with an ingenious sliding dovetail on the side rails of the desk that slots into a hidden ‘V’ shaped slot in the desk top.

We use two of the finest hardwoods found worldwide to build our Safari Desks. Zambezi Teak is one of the hardest and most beautiful timbers you will ever come across. It has a beautiful rich red brown colour and varied grain. African Mahogany, also known as chamfuti locally,  has a more uniform but equally compelling red-brown colour. Mahogany is the timber traditionally used to build Campaign Furniture. You may prefer mahogany for true authenticity!

The brass rail on your Safari Desk is solid polished brass. It requires polishing with a good brass polish from time to time.

Lacquer finish:

To protect your lacquered finish please place your Safari Desk away from direct sunlight. Apply a good furniture wax or polish, initially twice a month, thereafter once a month, sufficient to thinly cover the surface. As it dries (becomes dull) buff with a clean cloth until a beautiful sheen is achieved. Between waxings, keep the finish clean with a soft cloth or duster, and buff without wax.

We build with timber harvested from natural forests. The charm of this material is that no two pieces are exactly the same in colour, character or grain, and they will contain natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks and so on that enhance their authenticity and attractiveness. As a result no 2 pieces will ever be identical and products may have natural imperfections. However, these will never be allowed to compromise the quality of construction of your piece.

The Safari Desk packs very conveniently for international shipping. The legs disassemble easily and the brass connecting bar unbolts. The desk top is packed with soft Air-o-thene packing into a thick walled cardboard box. The legs and connecting rods are then carefully wrapped and the whole sealed. Loose bolts, joining screws etc will be packed in a packet. The Safari Desk can be sent either by airfreight to your nearest airport, or by sea freight.

An excellent chair to go with the Campaign Officer’s Desk is the Okavango Leather Chair. It has also been designed to flat pack for economic shipping.
