The Design
The Safari Desk fills a niche requirement for a luxurious but practical and functional writing desk that will enhance the finest residence, safari camp or hotel room. The solid brass fittings are an integral part of the design that don’t only give it an unmatched opulence. They also serve very practical purpose. The brass connecting rod holds the desk securely and rigidly together with solid brass 16mm bolts and washers. Removing the brass bolts allows the desk legs to be folded down and the whole flat packed for easy transport. The cast solid brass corner blocks protect the desk top from knocks when on safari.
Enhancing the function of the Safari Desk as a writing desk is the central writing pad covered in genuine leather, tanned for us by our Bulawayo tannery.
Construction
Large solid hardwood slabs such as the Safari desk top will tend to warp with changing ambient humidity. That is unless they are fixed to a rail while being allowed to move horizontally. We have achieved this with an ingenious sliding dovetail on the side rails of the desk that slots into a hidden ‘V’ shaped slot in the desk top.
Material
We use two of the finest hardwoods found worldwide to build our Safari Desks. Zambezi Teak is one of the hardest and most beautiful timbers you will ever come across. It has a beautiful rich red brown colour and varied grain. African Mahogany, also known as chamfuti locally, has a more uniform but equally compelling red-brown colour. Mahogany is the timber traditionally used to build Campaign Furniture. You may prefer mahogany for true authenticity!
