The Design

The design for the Campaign Luggage rack was suggested by one of our very talented interior decorator clients. Having seen the Leather Luggage Rack and the Campaign Officer’s Desk, he suggested using the style of legs from the latter to make a very smart luggage rack. That’s what we did, and the end result is very pleasing!

The Material

The African Touch Campaign Luggage Rack is beautifully handcrafted from the finest of African hardwoods, the finest pure veg-tanned bovine harness leather, and a beautifully engineered solid brass connecting tube with solid brass end bolts. The stylishly curved legs are hand-built from Zambezi Teak, also known as Rhodesian Teak, an extremely dense African hardwood, with beautiful grain and deep rich coloration. The solid brass connecting rod is constructed and polished in our Victoria Falls studio. The bovine harness leather straps are hand stitched to reinforced canvas backing to prevent stretch with heavy use.

The construction.

Building the legs of the campaign luggage rack takes great skill from a master craftsman. The teak planks are carefully selected from our stores for colour and grain. They must be wide enough to take the pattern of the legs. Unfortunately, there is inevitably some waste here as the curved legs are cut out of the rectangular board, but such is the price of quality design. The artisan then cuts the shape of the legs out with a bandsaw. After this comes to the real skill when she will sit and shape the legs carefully with a spokeshave until she gets the perfect shape and form. A real art, but well worth it for the final product.

The legs of this campaign luggage rack are then connected with the solid brass connecting rod with big oversize solid brass bolt and washers. This allows the luggage rack to fold neatly. Finally, the genuine leather reinforced straps are screwed on under equal tension to finish this wonderful piece.

Where to use The Campaign Luggage Rack

A luggage rack of unrivalled class and luxury, it will be ideal in any upmarket home or hostelry. I don’t think you could get a better product for a five-star hotel bedroom or top Safari Lodge. One friend of ours had one shipped to London for his ‘Africa Room’!

Timber

1. Zambezi Teak, 2. African Mahogany

To protect your lacquered timber finish place the luggage rack away from direct sunlight. Apply a good furniture wax or polish, initially twice a month, thereafter once a month. Apply sufficient to thinly cover the surface. As it dries (becomes dull) buff with a clean cloth until a beautiful sheen is achieved. Between waxings, keep the finish clean with a soft cloth or duster, and buff without wax.

Leather Straps

To protect and nourish your leather straps, we carry The African Touch Leather Food stocks in our outlets.

Firstly clean the leather with a damp cloth. Hide Food should always be applied using a lint free cloth, a natural or synthetic sponge using an even circular motion. Drying is temperature related but the cream generally dries in a couple of minutes after which it can be buffed with a polish brush or soft cloth. It will renovate and provide an elegant lustre. It also provides a good degree of water resistance.

At The African Touch we build with timber harvested from natural forests. The charm of this material is that no two pieces are exactly the same in colour, character or grain, and they will contain natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks and so on that enhance their authenticity and attractiveness.

Solid wood naturally oxidises and darkens with age. Zambezi teak in particular will change from a beautiful light honey brown to a darker rich red brown on exposure to light. This is a natural process so the product you receive will certainly change colour with time and may not look exactly the same as products in brochures or on our web sites.

We give a 1 year warranty against construction and material flaws for your Campaign Luggage Rack. Naturally, any miss handling or inappropriate use of the product will invalidate the warranty. The African Touch will not in any circumstances be liable for any claim which falls outside the scope of our warranty or for any consequential damages whatsoever.
