The Design

The Kalahari Chair is a beautifully hand built chair with leather upholstered seats, designed for comfortable, easy sitting. The chair was inspired by simple farmhouse chairs of the Cape from the nineteenth century. We wanted a chair that was genuinely hand built as it would have been when the trekkers moved from the Cape into the interior of the Kalahari in the early 1800s.

The materials.

Built from sustainably harvested Zambezi Teak (a.k.a. Rhodesian Teak) or African Mahogany, this hand built chair is will stay in your family for generations. The seats are upholstered in genuine leather.

Where to use the Kalahari Chair

The Kalahari Chair will add a touch of African class to your dining room, at your office desk or in the boardroom of the great multi-national corporations.

This wonderful hand built chair goes very well with our famous tables – the Bridge, Baobab or Shangani.

Leather covers.

To protect and nourish your leather covers, we recommend you use African Touch Leather Food. We carry stocks of Leather Food in our outlets should you require it.

Firstly clean the leather with a damp cloth. Leather Food should always be applied using a lint free cloth, a natural or synthetic sponge using an even circular motion. Drying is temperature related but the cream generally dries in a couple of minutes after which it can be buffed with a polish brush or soft cloth. It will renovate and provide an elegant lustre. It also provides a good degree of water resistance.

Timber Frame

To protect your lacquered timber frame place furniture away from direct sunlight (this will also protect the leather). Apply a good furniture wax or polish, initially twice a month, thereafter once a month. Apply sufficient to thinly cover the surface. As it dries (becomes dull) buff with a clean cloth until a beautiful sheen is achieved. Between waxings, keep the finish clean with a soft cloth or duster, and buff without wax.

We cannot offer a warrantee on chairs except for defects in material and workmanship that affect the integrity of the chair under normal use and weight limits. The reason for this is that chairs can be subject to huge stresses (such as when a heavy person rocks back on the back legs) that are impossible to compensate for in the construction of the chair without compromising on the design appeal.

We build with timber harvested from natural forests. The charm of this material is that no two pieces are exactly the same in colour, character or grain, and they will contain natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks and so on that enhance their authenticity and attractiveness. As a result no 2 pieces will ever be identical and products may have natural imperfections. However, these will never be allowed to compromise the quality of construction of your piece.

The African Touch will not in any circumstances be liable for any claim which falls outside the scope of our warranty or for any consequential damages whatsoever.

We offer 10% discount for orders of 10 or more chairs, and to Professional designers and decorators. The discount will reflect in your quote.

Prices include ‘Door to Door’ shipping.  However, the price may exclude fees at the port of entry (customs clearance, tax such as VAT etc).
