Swahili Daybed

R18,900.00

The Swahili daybed is an integral part of the culture of the coastal Swahili people of East Africa. Many households along the coast will have one, where it has multiple uses. During the day, with puffed up cushions, it is a comfortable couch from which to take tea with friends or a refreshing nap in the shade during the balmy afternoons. At night it converts to a comfortable bed for a good night’s rest. The Swahili Daybed used a standard single bed mattress.

The Design

The Colonists soon cottoned on to the delight of owning a daybed in the African tropics, and adapted the Swahili daybed to their own requirements. Designed as a knock-down piece for easy transport on safari, this makes it convenient to ship and install. Traditionally the legs were turned, and we have incorporated this design element into our daybed. The base size is the same as a standard single mattress.

Construction

Our Swahili daybeds are built with the bed ends, backrest and base rails as individual pieces which bolt together very simply with six specially imported Danish connectors. Thus the whole flat-packs very conveniently for transport and installation in tight spaces. It is very simple to assemble with the spanner provided.

Material

We use Zambezi Teak (previously known as Rhodesian teak) to build our magnificent Swahili daybed. It is hard, extremely durable and therefore ideally suited for this fine piece.

Uses

Safari daybeds are very popular with guests on the veranda of their safari lodge to lounge away the hot hours between walks or drives in the bush or to relax in the cool of the evening. They are also a wonderful addition to a house or flat with limited space where they are a couch during the day and a bed at night. Often used as an alternative to the Triple Morris Chair

To protect your lacquered finish please place your Daybed away from direct sunlight. Apply a good furniture wax or polish, initially twice a month, thereafter once a month. Apply sufficient to thinly cover the surface. As it dries (becomes dull) buff with a clean cloth until a beautiful sheen is achieved. Between waxings, keep the finish clean with a soft cloth or duster, and buff without wax.

We offer a 15 year warranty on your Swahili Daybed for any flaws in construction or material (except natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks etc.) Miss handling or inappropriate use of the product will invalidate the warranty. This warranty does not apply to the base slats that can be broken by misuse.

We will supply you with our suggested care and maintenance guidelines to ensure life-long enjoyment of your furniture. However we cannot be held responsible for repairing / replacing this product if you don’t follow these guidelines.

We build with timber harvested from natural forests. The charm of this material is that no two pieces are exactly the same in colour, character or grain, and they will contain natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks and so on that enhance their authenticity and attractiveness. As a result no 2 pieces will ever be identical and products may have natural imperfections. However, these will never be allowed to compromise the quality of construction of your piece.

For large orders of 5 or more day beds we offer discounts. Please enquire with our sales staff what discounts are available.
