Roorkhee Safari Chair

From: R5,670.00

The Roorkhee Chair is portable, lightweight, and extremely comfortable. A very unusual design based on a British Army campaign chair of the 19th century.

Designed to disassemble with a few leather belts and stow in a bag, it is very easy to set up! When sat in, the straps, arm rests, seat, and back all act in tension to keep the chair firm and comfortable. This functional design also makes it stable on uneven ground. The Roorkhee chair canvas carry bag is available as an optional extra. Please enquire if you would like one.

Each component is hand turned in African mahogany and then finished with furniture oil or lacquer. Lacquer brings out the grain of the timber beautifully but is not suited to outdoor use.  All fittings are solid brass commissioned especially for this chair.

Covers offered are full veg tanned harness leather or comfortable Canvas. We offer the Karoo Khaki canvas option with a built in cushion which is very comfortable indeed – well worth the small extra cost!

Recommended weight limit 100kg (220lb). Please do not rock back and forth on any chair.

Origin of the Roorkhee Chair.

The Roorkhee chair (sometimes called the Roorkee chair) was originally designed as a British Army campaign chair. It was first built in the town of Roorkhee in the foothills of the Himalayas by an unknown artisan working for the Indian Army Corps of Engineers, then part of the British Army. In 1899, the British Army faced an entirely new type of enemy. The Boer War in South Africa changed warfare forever. The enemy was tough, mounted guerillas with exceptional shooting skills who outmatched the British at every turn. The over-designed campaign furniture of the Victorian Era was unpractical for the new hit-and-run tactics which demanded something lighter and more versatile. The Roorkhee Campaign Chair fitted the bill perfectly. Light, practical, and easy to disassemble for travel yet still robust enough to stand rough treatment. The design also had the advantage of allowing the chair to adjust to uneven ground.

In 1933 Kaare Klint, considered by many to be the father of modern Danish design came across the Roorkhee chair while on safari in Africa. He re-invented the Roorkhee campaign chair and called it the Safari Chair. Ironically, it then became an iconic example of Danish Modern design.

Our design

We have adapted the original design of the Roorkhee Chair to beef up the timber sections and give a wider, more comfortable seat and backrest. The backrest swivels flawlessly on purpose-designed and commissioned solid brass bolts that add real class to the chairs. We also commissioned the solid brass buttons that hold the harness leather armrests in place. Brass nameplates hold the rear of the armrest to the rear leg.

These Roorkhee chairs are hand-turned in beautiful and durable African mahogany. The timber is finished with a fine furniture oil making it ideal for interior or exterior use. It is designed to be easy to assemble and disassemble, with no tools required.

Lacquer finish:

To protect your lacquered finish please on your Roorkhee Chair apply a good furniture wax or polish sufficient to thinly cover the surface. As it dries (becomes dull) buff with a clean cloth until a beautiful sheen is achieved. Between waxings, keep the finish clean with a soft cloth or duster, and buff without wax.

We cannot offer a warrantee on chairs except for defects in material and workmanship that affect the integrity of the chair under normal use and weight limits. The reason for this is that chairs can be subject to huge stresses (such as when a heavy person rocks back on the back legs) that are impossible to compensate for in the construction of the chair without compromising on the design appeal.

We build with timber harvested from natural forests. The charm of this material is that no two pieces are exactly the same in colour, character or grain, and they will contain natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks and so on that enhance their authenticity and attractiveness. As a result no 2 pieces will ever be identical and products may have natural imperfections. However, these will never be allowed to compromise the quality of construction of your piece.

The African Touch will not in any circumstances be liable for any claim which falls outside the scope of our warranty or for any consequential damages whatsoever.

We offer 10% discount for orders of 20 or more Roorkhee Chairs and to Professional designers and decorators. The discount will reflect in your quote.
