The design

The Morris Chair has been around since the 1860s. It has survived because of its exceptional comfort and timelessly enduring design. It is a very versatile chair – great as an armchair or sofa, casual chair for a patio or meeting chair in your office.

The chair comes knock down for ease of shipping if required. The seat is angled back and the backrest is adjustable to maximise comfort. The broad armrests are ideal to relax your arms clutching a glass or cup of your favourite beverage.

On two and three seaters there are individual backrests for each seat. The chair is solidly and heavily constructed and thus quite heavy (a single Mzilikazi Morris Chair weighs in at 40 kg). However, it will last for generations. At home we have a set of four singles and a double that we have had for twenty five years, and they are still good as new.

The Material and finish

The African Touch Mzilikazi Morris Chair is exquisitely built from one of the finest timbers in the world – Zambezi Teak, formerly known as Rhodesian Teak. It is a hard, durable timber. It is best known for the exquisite colour and grain of the timber. We finish our Morris chairs with a beautiful lacquer that protects the timber while bringing out the deep colour and grain.

Uses of the Morris Chair

The Morris Chair is generally used as an armchair on a patio or veranda. Two Single Morris Chairs on a room veranda or inside the room make excellent seating for guests. They are very comfortable and great to relax in with a glass of wine and good book.

Cushions

The chairs don’t come with cushions, but we can arrange them for you at an additional cost.

We use the Cedarbrook Fabrics  Patio 2 Collection for our cushion covers, where there is a wide range of colours to select from. This collection is manufactured from a combination of solution dyed and UV stabilized polyester and acrylic. Both fibres are resistant to rotting and mildew and mild acids and alkalis. The Patio 2 is treated with Rucoguard fabric protector which gives water, oil and general soil repellency which makes the cushions ideal for indoor or outdoor use. They are is machine washable and dry clean friendly.

History of the Morris Chair

This is such an iconic piece I would like to share some of the history of the Morris Chair.

The design for the Morris Chair originated in Essex, England in the 1860s. A carpenter by the name of Ephraim Colman devised a chair with an adjustable, reclining back. This seems logical in today’s world, but it was quite revolutionary back then. The design was adapted by William Morris‘s firm, Morris & Company, and the name stuck. By the early 1900s Gustav Stickley began producing his version of the Morris Chair in America, which made the genre known worldwide. The Stickley Morris Chair was a simplified version of the traditional form, with a rectilinear shape, flat arms, thick leather cushions, and the reclining back. Today, the Stickley Morris can be seen in traditional Craftsman style houses to modern luxury lofts and everywhere in between.
Our Morris Chair is named after Mzilikazi Khumalo the greatest King of the Matabele people, in whose land we build this King of chairs!

To accompany the Mzilikazi Morris Chair why not consider the Roosevelt Coffee Table?

To protect your lacquered finish please place your chairs away from direct sunlight. Apply a good furniture wax or polish, initially twice a month, thereafter once a month. Apply sufficient to thinly cover the surface. As it dries (becomes dull) buff with a clean cloth until a beautiful sheen is achieved. Between waxings, keep the finish clean with a soft cloth or duster, and buff without wax.
