How does this work?

The Serengeti Campaign Chair is The African Touch’s interpretation of one of the most admired campaign chair designs of the 19th century. Originally developed for travel, military officers and colonial expedition living, campaign furniture was designed to be practical, portable and beautifully made. This chair carries that same spirit into today’s safari lodges, luxury tented camps, boutique hotels, private studies, boardrooms and safari-inspired homes.

Each Serengeti Campaign Chair is handcrafted in African mahogany, a timber chosen for its strength, warmth and fine furniture appeal. The curved back leg is carefully worked from a single board of even, straight-grained mahogany, giving the chair its elegant profile and beautifully balanced proportions. The design is sleek without being delicate, refined without feeling overly formal, and instantly recognisable to those who appreciate classic campaign furniture.

The chair is upholstered in antique genuine bovine leather, specially tanned to retain its natural character, patina and texture. The seat and back provide a comfortable sitting experience, while the veg-tanned harness leather armrests add durability, authenticity and tactile warmth. Solid brass fittings complete the look, echoing the materials used by the finest London cabinetmakers of the 19th century.

Although elegant enough for interior design schemes, the Serengeti Campaign Chair remains practical. It folds conveniently for storage, making it useful for hospitality spaces where furniture may need to be moved, stored or reconfigured. It is ideal alongside The African Touch’s Campaign Officer’s Desk, Kalahari Campaign Desk and Namib Campaign Desk, and works equally well as a distinctive dining chair, boardroom chair, occasional chair or statement piece in a lodge suite.

For safari lodge owners, interior designers, architects and private homeowners, the Serengeti Campaign Chair offers more than seating. It brings together comfort, craftsmanship, African mahogany, genuine leather and the quiet romance of old expedition furniture. Manufactured by The African Touch in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, this is a chair designed for interiors where authenticity, durability and understated safari luxury matter.

Design

We have based our design on the classic campaign chair of the 19th century. The sleek, curved lines make for a beautifully proportioned chair that is very pleasing to those who appreciate fine furniture. The brass fittings, genuine upholstery leather of the seats and veg tanned harness leather armrests are true to the fine materials that were used by the top London cabinetmakers of the 19th century.

Material used in this fine chair

The timber components of the Serengeti Campaign Chair are made from very carefully selected grade 1 African mahogany. The curved back leg is carefully handcrafted from a single board of even and straight grained mahogany. The genuine bovine leather is specially tanned for us leaving the natural imperfections in the leather and finishing with the patina and texture of old leather luxury.

Uses

The Serengeti Campaign Chair is ideal to use with our various campaign desks – the Campaign Officer’s Desk, Kalahari Campaign Desk and Namib Campaign Desk.  It is also a great chair for a boardroom table, such as our Baobab Boardroom Table or as a fine dining chair.

How To Choose The Right Campaign Chair

When choosing a campaign chair, look beyond the shape of the chair and consider the materials, construction, comfort and setting in which it will be used. A true campaign chair should feel purposeful, portable and beautifully made. It should carry the character of expedition furniture while still offering the comfort expected in a modern lodge, home or hospitality space.

For safari lodges, boutique hotels and high-use hospitality interiors, timber quality is important. A hardwood frame provides strength, weight and long-term durability. The Serengeti Campaign Chair is made from carefully selected African mahogany, giving it the warmth and refinement suited to luxury safari interiors.

Leather quality also matters. Genuine leather develops character with age and is well suited to heritage-style furniture. The Serengeti’s antique leather upholstery and veg-tanned harness leather armrests create a lived-in, authentic look that works beautifully with safari lodge interiors, campaign desks, hardwood floors, woven rugs and natural textiles.

The fittings are another sign of quality. Solid brass details not only add to the design authenticity but also contribute to the overall feel of a well-made piece of furniture. Buyers should also consider whether the chair folds, how easily it can be stored, and whether it suits both formal and relaxed spaces.

For interior designers and project specifiers, the right campaign chair should feel versatile. It should work as a desk chair, occasional chair, dining chair or boardroom chair without looking out of place. The Serengeti Campaign Chair is particularly well suited to hospitality projects where the furniture needs to feel distinctive, timeless and rooted in safari heritage.

To protect and nourish the antique leather upholstery, clean the leather gently with a damp cloth before applying a suitable leather food. Apply the leather food with a lint-free cloth or sponge using an even circular motion. Once dry, buff the surface with a soft cloth or polish brush.

Leather is a natural material and will develop character over time. Avoid placing the chair in harsh direct sunlight for extended periods, and wipe away spills as soon as possible. Regular care will help preserve the richness, comfort and patina of the leather.

Guarantee And Natural Timber Note

The African Touch warrants chairs against defects in materials and workmanship that affect the integrity of the chair under normal use and within the recommended weight limit. Chairs are subject to high stresses when misused, particularly if rocked backwards on the rear legs, so this should be avoided.

Each chair is made from natural hardwood and genuine leather. Variations in colour, grain, texture and natural markings are part of the character of the materials and make every piece unique. These natural variations will not compromise the quality or construction of the chair.

We cannot offer a warrantee on chairs except for defects in material and workmanship that affect the integrity of the chair under normal use and weight limits. The reason for this is that chairs can be subject to huge stresses (such as when a heavy person rocks back on the back legs) that are impossible to compensate for in the construction of the chair without compromising on the design appeal.

The African Touch will not in any circumstances be liable for any claim which falls outside the scope of our warranty or for any consequential damages whatsoever.
